Interview: Common Muse

I read about Common Muse via a post about single statement earrings on Into The Gloss. I don't know much about the brand but I fell in love with their minimalist luxe aesthetics and the beautiful product shots. I love discovering and supporting new talent, so ordering a few things felt like the right thing to do. After a few weeks of mulling over which styles to buy, so I ordered the Perle drop earrings in both silver and gold to be styled differently.

I emailed Jel, the founder firstly for some styling advice with the earrings (because I am a noob with jewellery) and we started talking more. Jel is super friendly and she has a great taste in design and fashion. I am curious to know the story of her brand and I am grateful that she has spared a few minutes for a little interview.

Can you please let us a bit about your background and how did you get into jewellery?

Thanks to the internet, I was exposed to graphic and web design since I was young. I took a Major  in Visual Communications and Media Design. During one of my school holidays, I created an e-commerce blog out of boredom to sell clothing and accessories. I enjoyed the process it was slowly shaping my career path. I earned an internship in visual merchandising at Club 21, a luxury fashion retailer. Upon graduation, I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in fashion but I figured that fashion jewellery speaks to me more strongly.

When and how did Common Muse come about?

I shut down the online shop that as I knew moving on was the right thing to do. As soon as I graduated in 2014, I was entirely committed to creating my brand as a form of self-expression on top of being a business. I wanted to present my brand differently from other fashion jewellery brands, so I started Common Muse with the intention of redefining luxury in jewellery. To me, luxury is about how you feel, not about the price tag. Common Muse was only recently launched in August 2015, but I look forward to see how it will grow and mature in the years to come.

What are your favorite pieces from Common Muse?

My favourites change from time to time, depending on what my current “uniform” is. At the moment, the Elska round choker and bangle are my go-to pieces since they are so versatile and timeless!

Where do you seek your inspirations from?

I tend to seek inspirations from the past, especially the 70’s and 90’s. It makes me reflect about how fashion was done and how it has since evolved. There is always something to take away from the archives. I find Pinterest a really useful (and fun!) platform to collect those inspirations.

If you can name someone, who is your muse?

Charlotte Rampling for her inimitably elegant and effortless style.
